New Fantasy Book Releases : August 2020

New months bring new books! I’ve scoured the catalogs to bring you a selection of upcoming releases. As the publishing industry can be chaotic, these dates are subject to change. Unless indicated, I have not had a chance to read or review any of these books. I just want to share my excitement. Click any links provided to purchase or pre-order and support your favorite (or new) authors!

This month, I focused on authors new to me, but I also wanted to inform you of some upcoming sequels for big series. This is by no means a comprehensive list, simply a few of the books that stuck out to me. Keep an eye out for some of your favorite books being published in paperback for the first time as well.

The first week of the month brings mostly sequels to series of varying popularity.

By Force Alone by Lavie Tidhar

Everyone thinks they know the story of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table.

They fact is they know only lies.

Arthur is no romantic hero.
Merlin is no paternal sage.
And a sword is just a sword, until it runs you through.

Triumff by Dan Abnett

It is the year 2010, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth XXX sits upon the throne of the Anglo-Hispanic Empire. Fuelled by alchemy and superstition, the Elizabethan era has endured unchallenged for almost 450 years. But now, a shadow conspiracy threatens to bring it to a violent end…

Unfortunately for roguish adventurer Sir Rupert Triumff, lately fallen from favour at court, he makes the perfect scapegoat. If Triumff is to uncover the plot, save the Queen, and clear his name, he’ll need all his wit, skill, and charm, and every tool in his magical Coutteau suisse. Even the nail buffer.

I am by far the most excited about By Force Alone, as I have a thing for Arthurian legends, but Triumff sounds really fun.

Sequel:

August 18

Electric Breakfast by Paul Meloy

A holiday camp in France where a grieving father and his daughters discover the tragic secret to the prolongation of their sadness; a man tormented by a life of failures is given the opportunity for revenge in a very classical sense; a father and son find courage through their love of black and white comedies to rise up against the force of destruction that has come into their life; a man driving on a quiet country road discovers the true form of the child in the back seat a little too late.

There are victims in these stories, and heroes, sometimes both at once. Overcomers and underachievers, the ghastly, the emotionally stunted, the fearsome and the wise. If there is a theme throughout, then it’s about the fight, the fight for those you love, for life, for reality, for sanity. And not everyone gets up at the end.

The Vanished Queen by Lisbeth Campbell

Long ago, Queen Mirantha vanished. King Karolje claimed it was an assassination by a neighboring king, but everyone knew it was a lie. He had Disappeared her himself.

The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy by Asagi Tosaka

Battles for ancient kingdoms are nothing compared to the battles of a classroom!

Awakening from magical stasis after a thousand years, the Dark Lord Leonis suddenly finds himself in the body of a ten-year-old boy! He quickly meets Riselia, a girl confronting the Voids, creatures that have nearly exterminated humanity. Determined to uncover the mysteries of this strange new era, Leonis enrolls in Excalibur Academy, a school that trains students to fight back against these enigmatic monsters. Could the Voids hold some connection to Leonis’s past?

The last book is known as a “light novel,” which is a cross between a novel and manga. It has some illustrations, and is considered easier to get into if you are curious about manga.

Sequels:

Ink & Sigil by Kevin Hearne

Al MacBharrais is both blessed and cursed. He is blessed with an extraordinary white mustache, an appreciation for craft cocktails—and a most unique magical talent. He can cast spells with magically enchanted ink and he uses his gifts to protect our world from rogue minions of various pantheons, especially the Fae.

But he is also cursed. Anyone who hears his voice will begin to feel an inexplicable hatred for Al, so he can only communicate through the written word or speech apps. And his apprentices keep dying in peculiar freak accidents. As his personal life crumbles around him, he devotes his life to his work, all the while trying to crack the secret of his curse.

But when his latest apprentice, Gordie, turns up dead in his Glasgow flat, Al discovers evidence that Gordie was living a secret life of crime. Now Al is forced to play detective—while avoiding actual detectives who are wondering why death seems to always follow Al. Investigating his apprentice’s death will take him through Scotland’s magical underworld, and he’ll need the help of a mischievous hobgoblin if he’s to survive.
